How semi-urban fresher girls can adapt to the urban set-up of corporate lifestyle.

Are you an aspiring engineer or a graduate who dreams of making it big in the world of corporate? Then you are one among the lakhs of female students who completes education to compete in the dog eat dog world of giant companies. Unlike the fact that it looks all rosy from the outside, big organizations have their share of infamy. That is why the lifestyle in such a set-up is called a double edged sword. The ones who can take care of one-selves can survive without taint and others go through rough patch before getting know things as such.

Read ahead to know how to adapt to this kind of set-up if you are particularly from an entirely different locale.

Land the dream job

It all begins with the resume which stands out along with the presence of the candidate in the particular city which provides ample employment opportunities. Go ahead and get yourself a place in the city to increase your chances of getting hired. Elucidate your profile in a way that you have an edge over the city educated candidates with lot of research and guidance. The resume should be able to present itself by highlighting who you are, what you can do and what you want to become. One of the easy shortcuts to secure a job is through networking. So get connected with all the friends and relatives who can assist in your job search. Once getting the job, the stage is set for the drama.

Avoid getting carried away

The first few days in an upscale environment can teach you lot of things which you may never have faced in a student life like, hyper competition, profit oriented tasks, office gossip, targets, swanky spaces and furniture etc. The trick is to take everything in stride and not get overwhelmed or underwhelmed by those. Your attitude at workplace must reflect your knowledge and confidence. One must take praise and criticism with a pinch of salt, because nothing is subjective in the culture of corporate.

Dress for success

This is an area where you  get to score by wearing nice formal clothes and accessorizing with the neat things which go hand in hand with the dress. A-line kurtas, simple patterned churidars and formal shirts go well for week days and smart casuals during fridays are the current trend in the office environment. Wearing crisp and clean clothes communicate sincerity and image. A simple rule is that the employees who deal mostly with client's money are supposed to dress traditionally and conservatively (example marketing, sales, board members etc.), where as the creative and strategy teams are expected not more than smart casuals.

By stating attire I don't mean to buckle down and begin to focus much on the clothing side, though it is hugely important to look very practical and comfortable. Ultimately it boils down to one thing which is comfort. Too much make up, too many accessories and fancy clothes may send wrong signals across. So neutral dressing is a wise choice.

Multicultural friends

Diversity is very widely seen in a city like Bangalore or Chennai. It must be seen as a benefit to blend in with the coworkers, from who one can learn various styles ranging from clothing to language. Cultural diversity provokes curiosity within the friends you make. It helps you learn various practices and traditions which in turn increases the tolerance to other cultures which makes you grow as a person. Though always be cautious to slightly blur the line between colleagues and friends because there is a new concept called office politics which you might not have faced in college and which quite is inevitable.

Being financially stable in a big city

Having moved from a semi-urban city like Madurai to Chennai is going to take a toll on your pocket particularly if it is not deep enough. Big cities offer activities and excitements that hardly match the smaller locales, so naturally new graduates tend to explore and enjoy. If you are on a tight budget then you will have to adjust your expenses to tune in with the high cost of living. Sharing rooms, staying in inexpensive neighbourhoods, sharing groceries, cooking at home, going dutch on treats, using  public libraries for internet, using public transport are some of the ways to save some part of the salary without getting bankrupt mid-month.

Swim or sink

Colleges are entirely different from workplaces, mostly examinations are the means of judgement. It is certainly not so at a workplace. Daily activities, consistency, good attitude, attendance, stress tolerance, creativity, interpersonal skills and many more factors are considered during an appraisal which involves your career growth unlike the easy going college environment. Corporate life can sometimes be inescapable and unforgiving at all levels of work. Thus one has to get accustomed to toilsome work conditions. A multinational company may also be highly rewarding when things are done right consistently, so one has to aim for it.

Be yourself

After all said and done, it comes down to one thing, you must be yourself at all times and never give up on your individuality. It is you who has broken barriers and come ahead to sit in the position at a company. It is you who have a family back at home who expects a decent share of your salary. It is you who put up a face which would please the customer and make deals as outcomes. Finally it is you who have to deal with the day to day activities of your work life and find inner peace by the end of the day. So be authentic and speak for real. A team full of employees would only follow you if you show your true self and make sure they who you are.

For a new-grad from a semi-urban locale, it is a challenge to face the real world out there in the name of an MNC. Also look out for your own safety in the unfamiliar surroundings. Be ready to take risks, step out of your comfort zone, stretch your limits to become an achiever.

Simple, yet poignant lyrics (II)

I've got a knack of discovering pleasant songs, excellent movies, endearing books very late in time, sometimes even after it's fad fades away. One such song is Perunthil nee enaku... The beauty of this song is that it relates to some very simple, unnoticed but pleasing moments in a our day to day life. The duet is of two people who sing about  what they mean to each other. There are some cute imperfections in Madhushri's tamil pronunciation but the male singer makes up for all that. Duh! Why do I even have to annotate the lyrics? It speaks for itself. ;) Perunthil nee enaku jannal oram Pin vasal mutrathil ne tulasi madam Vidumurai natkalil pallikoodam Vilayattu pillaigalin chella kobam Aalilla nalliravil ketkum padal Anbe anbe neeye (hmmm....) Quote Wonderment (I)

I'm totally sick of examinations and stuff. World's worst stressors are exams. I've always had this opinion right from my childhood. Hmmm... So to get a break I was running through my old memories and thoughts. One such is the admiration for this quote, "Sometimes people are beautiful. Not in looks. Not in what they say. Just in what they are." --Markus Zusak The quote itself is amazing. Reminds me of so many things. And note that Markus Zusak's wonderful book called 'The Book Thief' which was a good read. Laziness blocks me from writing more. ;)

2 States - Oh please, no!

I don't know why I chose to read '2 States' over 'The Subtle Knife'. My copy of 'Subtle Knife' is sleeping in the shelf. I wish I had finished it off instead of reading this one. M' Okay let me tell why this book was so insipid, [beware of spoilers hehe!] Possible reasons why I picked up this book: 1. Thought it would be a light-read. 2. It involved IIM A 3. Curiosity to know the speciality of Tamil girls 4. Heard it is a slapstick comedy [ which is not, in any way] Top reasons why I disliked it: 1. Cliched plot with stale scenes. [Ithellam nanga 'Poovellam Kettupar' la ye pathutomm, Chetan!!] 2. Making fun of South-Indians went overboard. [where Punjabis were never hurt in any dialogues, a very feeble mocking was clear] 3. Nothing less than a Bollywood drama, too filmy! 4. Totally predictable. 5. Ananya herself [there're are a multitude of reasons to hate her, which I won't enumerate here] 6. The feeling of reading his p
